The people that dared to sign up for the Mystery Trip on 7/23/16 had a real treat this evening. After a very enjoyable meal at 400 Beach in St. Pete, they traveled to the Free Fall Theatre to see SCOTT AND PATTI starring Scott Daniel and Matt McGee. Tonight's show featured Broadway entertainers, but here is an excerpt from one of their previous shows:
THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
The Travel Club had a very enjoyable day together on Saturday, June 18th. Our first stop was at Leverock's in St. Pete for dinner. It didn't matter whether you ordered steak, chicken cordon bleu, or salmon........everyone reported that their meal was excellent. As if the good meal wasn't enough, there was cheesecake for dessert. Our next stop was the Free Fall Theatre. They always put on a fantastic production, and today was no exception.
This lush contemporary musical tells the story of Margaret and her daughter Clara on their visit to Florence in the summer of 1953. A chance meeting between Clara and a handsome young Florentine set both of their hearts ablaze. As Margaret attempted to shield her daughter from the outside world, we became aware that all is not as it seems. I'm sure all the ladies enjoyed the eye candy too! And that's all we will say. You'll just have to go and see for yourself to get the rest of the story!

If this had been listed on the newsletter as a regular trip and not a mystery trip, I guarantee it still would have filled up right away! Who could turn down a trip like this?!! The first stop was the Parkshore Grill in downtown St. Pete, one of our favorite places. Not only is the food scrumptious and the service excellent, but we even had a private dining room where we were treated like royalty. Our next stop took us to the Mahaffey Theater to see TANGO LOVERS. What a show! This world renowned touring group from Argentina and Uruguay is getting rave reviews and was awarded as the best musical show of the year by Latin ACE 2015 in New York. It will be a night to remember for sure!
Mystery Trips are always fun. There's that element of excitement because you have no idea of where you are going or what you will be doing. It gives you the opportunity to try new things that you might never have thought of doing. The trips always involve great meals at new restaurants, and you get to know other areas of Florida within driving distance. As the time for this trip drew nearer, there was the anticipation of the upcoming Hurricane Erika that was heading toward our state. Would we be heading in a direction that was also going to bring us weather?! But Erika dissipated, and we were free to have a good time. And that we did! This trip hit the jackpot. It took us to New Port Richey and Jimmy Ferraro's Studio Theatre to see Martin Preston as Liberace! (See our very own Carole Felicia in picture with Liberace.) What a fabulous show! Preston made us believe he WAS Liberace! Between the costume changes and his fabulous rings and glitter, the man could really tickle those ivories. We were treated to an afternoon of great entertainment. While he was changing costumes, we listened to the fabulous songs sung by a young artist named Austin. After the show we walked around the corner to dine at Boulevard Beef and Ale where a wonderful buffet featuring haddock, chicken, and steak marsala were the choices. For dessert we had the choice of key lime pie, black forest cake, or blueberry cheesecake. What a day!
When we boarded the bus at StrawBerry Ridge, we already knew we were going to have a wonderful day. And we were not disappointed! Our first stop was at Leverock's Restaurant in Pasadena. We've been there before, and the food is always special with service to match. And then it was on to the FreeFall Theatre on Central Avenue. We were going to see Matt McGee star as MAME. We were already acquainted with Matt from the many productions he was in at the Show Palace in Hudson. To say he is talented would be an understatement. He was fantastic! It's hard to imagine that Rosalind Russell or Angela Lansbury or even Lucille Ball played the role of Mame any better than Matt does! And really, all the actors in the play did a bang up job including the musicians! And when we got back to the Ridge, we saw that we had received rain and free car washes. Yes, it was a good day....
All we knew about the Mystery Trip when we left StrawBerry Ridge was that we'd have a good time. The bus headed west when we left but then turned south on I-75. You could hear the buzzing..... Bradenton? Fort Myers? Sarasota? But then it entered the ramp for the Crosstown. Oh........change of ideas. When we exited off on the Gandy and went across the bridge, our thoughts turned to the possibilities in Pinellas county. The bus took us to the Pasadena Steak House where we all enjoyed a delicious meal. Our next stop was at the FreeFall Theatre in St. Petersburg to see the production of HARVEY! Now, if you don't know, "Harvey" is an invisible 6'3" rabbit! The play was very enjoyable and amusing. The actors were well cast and didn't miss a beat. You can't go wrong when you sign up for a Mystery Trip. No wonder they sell out as soon as they get announced!
There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to travel to The Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson with the travel club. After a delicious buffet dinner, the group was treated to a presentation of THE KING AND I which featured spectacular costumes and beautiful music. It was such a delight to watch the scenes as the actors all played their parts without a hitch. It was surprising to see how well the children performed.
The Travel Club flew from Tampa to Singapore where they boarded a Celebrity Cruise Ship. Besides visiting Singapore, they also stopped at Phuket, Thailand, and Yangon, Myanmar. They also made stops at Langkawi, Malaysia, and Penang, Malaysia, and Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Thanks to Larry Cummings for providing the pictures. The beauty of the area can only really be captured in person, but the pictures give an idea of what was seen. It was the trip of a lifetime!
